This portfolio piece is from a learning project created in 2022, designed for a chemical company employees to identify hazard symbols. I’ve adapted a segment of this project into Storyline for my portfolio. The content has been modified to exclude branding and proprietary information in compliance with the non-disclosure agreement and data protection regulations.
Role- Storyboarding, eLearning development, compliance training facilitator.
Audience- support and non-technical staff of a chemical company
Tools- Articulate Storyline, Figma, Adobe Ai, Adobe Photoshop, Learning Management System, Javascript, xAPI, Visual Studio code.
Problem
The chemical industry demands rigorous attention to worker safety due to the handling of chemicals and active ingredients. Traditional compliance training often includes extensive content suited for industry professionals, which can be overwhelming for support and non-technical staff.
This difficulty in retaining vast information not directly related to their daily tasks led to low attendance and less completion rates in mandatory trainings. Consequently, the company was concerned meeting the national safety standards as it was in lower levels in their internal check of health and safety risk assessments.
Solution
The goal was to create an engaging self paced eLearning module that is accessible and relevant to support staff across different roles and departments. The massive content was divided into bite-sized lessons that split the information into digestible sections.
Instead of overwhelming users with excessive content, the design focused on scaffolding, providing only the essential information needed for awareness and daily tasks.
My Process
I designed the project by dividing it into three parts, which unlock as the learner completes each level.
-
Part 1: Learning Module
-
Provides concise information on each safety symbol.
-
-
Part 2: Quiz Bank
-
Includes a short quiz to test hazard symbol identification skills.
-
-
Part 3: Scenario-Based Questions
-
Presents practical situations where learners apply their knowledge of safety symbols to make informed decisions.
-
Results
-
Improved Engagement: Stakeholders reported increased course attendance and better performance in subsequent assessments.
-
Positive Learner Feedback: Learners found the module user-friendly, less intimidating, easy to understand, and precisely to the point.
The project effectively tackled the challenge of engaging non-technical staff in essential compliance training, resulting in improved training outcomes and stakeholder satisfaction. Consequently, this success led to a renewed collaboration with the client on another project.
The course includes a question bank with multiple question sets to prevent monotony and predictable question sequences.
I implemented a JavaScript trigger in Storyline to allow learners to download their certificates upon successful completion, fostering a sense of achievement and enabling the company to track learner metrics.
Additional triggers were set up to capture data such as completion rates, quiz scores, retry attempts, and time spent in the corporate's Learning Management System, generating a comprehensive learner interaction report.
